My long festive vacation

In Nepal, we are lucky to have one of the longest festival vacations. We get more than a month off to celebrate Dashain, Tihar, and Chhath. This year too, our school has given us holidays from September 22 to October 29. I think last year we had even more days off, but still, this feels like such a good break.

The best part is that this year I have very few assignments to complete, just re-solving my exam papers and doing some biology lab drawings. Last year was completely different. I had to finish so many sets, project works, and writing tasks that it felt overwhelming. I couldn’t spend my vacation peacefully because I was always worried about completing everything on time. This year feels so much lighter and happier.

Still, I have a little fear about my studies after the vacation. Our teachers have told us that the lessons will be taught very quickly so that the whole syllabus can be completed on time. I hope I can adjust and keep up with the fast pace.

Only three days are left for Dashain day, and I can already feel the excitement in the air. Dashain is one of my favorite festivals because it is all about family gatherings, blessings, delicious food, and of course, Dakshina (money!) from elders. I love wearing new clothes, visiting relatives, and seeing everyone in a festive mood. The tika ceremony feels so special because it reminds me how lucky I am to have my family’s love and blessings.I really enjoy playing swing and wearing yellowish grass like leaves of barley. The red tika on forehead and yellow leaves on hair make everyone shining and beautiful.

After Dashain, we celebrate Tihar, which is another festival I look forward to. Tihar is full of lights, decorations, and fun games like Deusi and Bhailo. The whole neighborhood looks beautiful with oil lamps and rangoli designs. I enjoy playing with lights, eating sel roti and mithai, and watching dogs, cows, and even crows being worshipped. We wear garland made up of marigold and tika of seven different colours on forehead.

Even though this vacation is long, it feels like it passes too quickly. I want to enjoy every moment, spend time with my family and friends, and make this festival season memorable. Festivals like Dashain and Tihar remind me of the importance of culture, togetherness, and happiness.
